The Bessa Valley project started in 1999 when businessman and wine connoisseur Heinz Hauptmann talked with Stephan von Neipperg (owner of several significant domains in Bordeaux) about the opportunity to purchase land in Bulgaria. By 2005, 140 hectares were planted with 55% Merlot and equal amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Bessa Valley is among the hills, between the Rhodope Mountains and the Maritsa River. The climate is continental. The terroir is influenced by the river and the mountain. The soil is clayey-and-sandy and clayey-stony, mixed with limestone, very similar to that in Saint Emilion, Bordeaux. The grapes are picked by hand and sorted twice, during the very grape harvesting and before pouring into the fermentation tanks. Only French barric type barrels are used. Bessa Valley is one of the most interesting projects of the new Bulgarian wine-making with a high start and a huge potential for development.
