Chateau Pape Clement
Pope Clement V was the most famous owner of this château, and a keen wine-maker. Often he would be seen in the vineyards to work with the peasants from the region. In 1309, he moved the papal palace to Avignon, where he continued to deal with wine by founding the Chateauneuf du Pape and he left the Graves domain to the Cardinal of Bordeaux. Back then, it was named to honour him – Chateau Pape Clement. The new story began in 1980 when Bernard Magrez purchased the chateau. Chateau Pape Clement's wine right away made a qualitative jump over everything made so far. Much of this is due to low yields, the collection of much more mature grapes, the precise sorting and the increasing use of new French barrels. Chateau Pape Clement makes modern wines with rich texture and intense mature fruit flavors.
