The Wachau region is situated in the valley of the Danube River west of Vienna. It is one of the oldest wine regions in Europe and also the west most region in Austria. Traditionally Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are grown here - on the same premises. In 2010 Rainer Wess moved to the Krems and rebuilt a 300 year old cellar building that was part of a local monastery. The yield is harvested from the beginning of October until the end of November. Wess abides the grapes until an optimal balance between ripeness and acidity is achieved but without the assistance of noble rot. The grape is hand-picked in small baskets. The vinification takes place in small sets to ensure control over the process and preserve the character of the sort in the specific lot. Since 2015 the winery included a red wine to its portfolio – Pinot Noir.
