The name Gran Moraine originates from the catastrophic floods and glacier movements in the north part of Willamette Valley, Oregon that took place during the last ice age. These events eft behind dry rivers of rocks, similar to the ones in Côte-d’Or, Burgundy (and the Moreni in Vitosha that are substantially larger). Around 90 hectares in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA (American Viticultural Area) are planted with the classical burgundy grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This region was classified in 2004, in order to designate the area with the oldest marine sediment-based soils in the entire Willamette Valley. Along with the climate, they provide conditions for the wines to possess a profile that is distinctive from those of neighboring regions. These are Oregon wines with the tradition and spirit of the classical Burgundy.
