Weingut Wittmann

Weingut Wittmann

From 1663, the Wittmann family and their ancestors were grape growers in the town of Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Today, Philipp Wittmann runs the estate, along with his parents and wife. Riesling is mainly grown, traditional for the region around the town of Westhofen with mostly marble-limestone soils. Two types of Pinot are also popular - Blanc and Gris - and Silvaner. Grapes have been grown organically for over 20 years. A lot of manual labor and skills lead only the best grains in the winery. The must is fermented naturally in wooden barrels. The slow fermentation and maturation deep in the cellars, at constantly low temperature and high humidity, preserves the natural aromas. Their best wines bear the names of the plots from which they come.

Rheinhessen

Rheinhessen

The Rhinehessen region is essential for the German wine industry and is home to almost a quarter of the country's vineyards; it is also the largest in terms of wine production. Rhinehessen is a relatively warm and dry region, protected from adverse climatic influences by mountain ranges such as Hunsrück and Taunus. Most of the vineyards are planted on the warm and fertile soils of the valley, which are ideal for growing ripe and healthy grapes, and with a reputation as a traditional source of exceptionally high-quality wines, the famous Rheinterrasse - a section of steep vineyards along the western bank of the Rhine River around the towns of Nierstein and Oppenheim - is well-known. White varieties dominate in Rhinehessen, with Riesling playing a leading role, followed by Müller-Thurgau, and significant areas of the vineyards are also allocated to Silvaner, Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris), and Weißer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc). Among the red varieties, Dornfelder is the leader, with almost double the acreage of the more familiar and beloved Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).

Weissburgunder

Weissburgunder

Weißburgunder or Pinot Blanc is a white wine grape variety used for the production of dry, sparkling and dessert wines. Although not the most glamorous member of the Pinot family, the variety has proven its value in various wine regions, including Alsace in northeastern France, Alto Adige in Italy and parts of Germany and Austria. Pinot Blanc's homeland is Burgundy, but perhaps Alsace is his home, although here it is somewhat overshadowed by the undoubted stars of the region - Riesling and Gevertrazminer. The wines are typical with almond aromas, with a hint of spice, apple and cream flavors. They may also show some mild mineral characteristics, which, however, usually subside after the widely practiced in the region oak maturation. Cremant d'Alsace sparkling wines, on the other hand, tend to be fresher, often showing a variety of nut flavors. The variety is also one of the few allowed in a champagne blend, along with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Munier. Outside France, Pinot Blanc is widely found in northwestern Italy, where it is known as Pinot Bianco. Here the style of wines are lighter, more distinct, rarely touching oak. Pinot Bianco is also used in the production of Italian sparkling wines: especially Franciacorta, Italy's answer to champagne. In Germany and Austria, the variety is known as Weissburgunder or Weisser Burgunder (literally "White Burgundy"). In Germany, the wines are usually light and refreshing, but in Austria the grapes are also used to make the sweet and textured Trockenbeerenauslese.
