NEW WORLD - New World wines include those produced in Australia, the United States, South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile. They are more often the product of new techniques, both in harvesting and in production. There are fewer rules that are less binding and less regulated. This, in turn, gives winemakers much more freedom to experiment with viticulture and vinification techniques. This leads to a difference in the style of the wines - they are bolder, usually contain higher levels of alcohol and are characterized by fruity, sweet flavors. These pronounced fruit characteristics are due to the climate in which the grapes are grown in the new world - with more sunshine.

Winemakers who belong to the "new world" do not consider terroir to be highly defining and more often bottle their wines without further aging.
