Merlot Sandstone is a soft and beautifully balanced wine that reveals aromas of ripe red cherry and plum, complemented by notes of sweet caramel and vanilla, resulting from aging in French and American oak barrels. Wente Vineyards

Wente Vineyards

California

California

California is the largest and most important wine region in the USA, stretching over an impressive ten degrees of latitude, which inevitably offers a variety of climatic and microclimatic conditions, and with the addition of diverse relief - mountains, valleys, plains, and plateaus, it becomes clear that there is indeed an astonishing selection of terroirs here; the state's winemaking history dates back to the 18th century when settlers and missionaries made their way to the western coast, however, California wines gained worldwide fame only in the last few decades - especially after the Paris Judgment of 1976, when in a blind tasting, California representatives won unconditionally against the French in both white and red wines; today, California hosts some of the largest wine companies in the world, as well as some boutique wineries with cult and expensive wines, sought after by connoisseurs and collectors; the main varieties grown in California are Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, but recently wines from Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah have also been successfully established; perhaps the most distinctive and terroir-expressive variety in California (and in the USA as a whole) is Zinfandel (Primitivo in Italy), which has found excellent conditions for development here; the cooler and northern regions, closer to the Atlantic coast (Sonoma), are more suitable for cooling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while further inland - Napa - is home to the most famous red wines in California based on Cabernet Sauvignon.

Merlot

Merlot

Southwest of France is Merlot’s birthplace - the regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Merlot is nowadays widely planted across the world much like Cabernet Sauvignon because it is an early maturing grape variety and because of its ability to ripen fully even in slightly cooler climates. Smooth, velvety, soft and rounded - an “easy drinking" wine with tender tannic structure - these are the common descriptions of Merlot wines.
