Arbois Blanc Chardonnay Domaine Role 2019

Art. # 4333

100% Chardonnay, this is a wine, a blend from different plots planted in the En Chagnon area, in Montigny-lès-Arsures. The soil consists mainly of loose gravel, some limestone, and gray marl, which offer richness and minerality.

Hand-picked and sorted. It ages for 9 months in oak barrels, including 30% - new.

It can be consumed now for its freshness and structured minerality or can be stored for 8-10 years to appreciate its flexibility and roundness. We recommend it with grilled fish, mussels, quiche, gratins, even cold banitsa.

Jura is a small wine-growing region in Eastern France, responsible for many traditional and extremely interesting wine styles. The region is squeezed between Burgundy to the west and Switzerland to the east. It is characterized by a landscape of wooded slopes and the twisting topography of the Jura Mountains. The vineyards of Jura cover just over 1850 hectares (4570 acres), forming a narrow strip of land measuring nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) from north to south. The total area is continuously increasing, but still represents less than one-tenth of the area under vine here two centuries ago, before phylloxera destroyed the vineyards in the region. The limestone mountains in the region are representative of geological developments that occurred between 145 million and 200 million years ago. The soils in this region are mainly limestone and marl. The wines of Jura are sold under five main appellations, with the most important in quantitative terms being Arbois and Côtes du Jura.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the world's most famous white-wine grape and also one of the most widely planted. Of course, the most highly regarded expressions of the variety are those from Burgundy and California, but many high-quality examples are made in Italy, Australia, New Zealand and parts of South America. Describing the flavours of Chardonnay is not easy. This is not thanks to the complexity of the varietal itself but usually due its susceptibility to winemaking techniques - such as Malolactic fermentation which gives distinctive buttery aromas or Fermentation or maturation in oak barrels which contributes to the wine with smokey notes of vanilla, honey and even cinnamon, and not last the lees contact while in barrel imparts biscuity, doughy flavours. And all these incorporated with the varietal aromas of tropical (banana, pineapple and guava) to stone fruits (peach, nectarine and apricot), sometimes even citrus and apple notes. Climate plays a major role in dictating which fruit flavours a Chardonnay will have - warm regions (California, Australia ) make more tropical styles; temperate zones (southern Burgundy, New Zealand) - stone fruit notes, while the very coolest (Chablis, Champagne) lean towards green-apple aromas.
