Khoven Merayo 2022

Art. # 4438
The variety is 100% Mencia, partly from 80-year-old vines planted on the steep slopes of Bierzo. The key to Merayo wines is the ancient bush vines planted on clay soils with pebbles at an average altitude of 600 meters. Another part of the grapes comes from 30-year-old vines planted in the flatter parts of the valley. Maceration and fermentation for 10 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine then rests for 6 months 'sur lie'. The aromas are fruity, mainly from berries and violets. Soft, yet concentrated in taste. Fresh and creamy, with fruity and spicy aromas. Excellent for barbecues or a platter of sausages.

Bodegas Merayo

Bodegas Merayo

In 2010, Pedro established ‘Merayo Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo’. After a life in the wine world, he has devoted the last 20 years to restoring and maintaining the family vineyards. The majority of the vines are more than 80 years old. For decades the Merayo family was one of the most important names in the Bierzo region (with bodega Merayo which closed its doors in 1989). Pedro then invested time in completely renovating the vineyards with a view to making good wines from the local grape varieties, which in Bierzo's case means mostly Mencia and Godello. He built the new bodega on the family estate and began to make wine there in 2010. The results were not long in coming.

Bierso

Bierso

Bierzo is a Spanish protected designation of origin (PDO) for wines, located in the northwestern part of the province of León (Castile and León, Spain) and covering about 3,000 km². To the north, it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo, and Asturias, and to the south, it borders the regions of La Montaña, La Cabrera, and La Meseta, in León. The area consists of numerous small valleys in the mountainous part (Alto Bierzo) and a wide, flat plain (Bajo Bierzo). The DO covers 23 municipalities, including the largest city in the area - Ponferrada. DOP Bierzo has a special macroclimate that is favorable for viticulture. On one hand, it is similar to the climate of Galicia in terms of humidity and precipitation, while on the other hand, it resembles the hot and dry climate of Castile. The low altitude also helps prevent late frosts and means that the harvest is usually about a month earlier than in Castile. The average annual temperature is around 12°C, with a winter minimum of 3.5°C and a summer maximum of 24°C. The average annual precipitation is just over 700 mm, and the vineyards receive about 2,200 hours of sunshine annually.

Mencía

Mencía
