For three hundred years, the Château Pontet-Canet has been owned by only three families - a rarity for the Médoc region. The new age comes with Guy Tesseron, a local cognac merchant who bought it in 1975. Together with Jean-Michel Comme, manager since 1989, he completely changed the vines and the identity of Château Pontet-Canet. They began to cultivate vines with minimal interference applying organic and biodynamic methods, and currently they use horses for field work. Guy Tesseron says that he and his team are not winemakers, but farmers. The work is only by hand, and vinification is based on gravity for minimal impact on grape grains. After a few years of experimenting at the winery, 100 concrete amphorae (dolia), designed by Pontet-Canet, were installed. In order to show respect for the purity of the fruit and the ground from which it comes, earth from the vineyards was also mixed in the concrete for these amphorae, where wine matures.
