Melnik or Shiroka Melnishka loa ( Broadleaved vine of Melnik ) is an exceptionally rare variety grown only in the region of the town of Melnik and specifically in the appellation of Harsovo village. Melnik can produce powerful wines that respond well to extended maturation in oak. They tend to be exotically perfumed, richly textured and have ample tannins. Actually, the variety benefits from the long, stable autumn weather of the region and the main challenge for the producer is to have the patience to wait for the full ripeness of this late ripening variety - which usually happens in mid-October.
