Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-coloured grape varieties. If this is your preferred style, then you’re in the right place. Here we will explain how red wine is made, how to choose a good one and we’ll get you to know some of the most renown wine regions for red wine production. You will find an amazing collection of more than 1000 red wine styles that come from all over the winemaking world - from fruity, easy going, fresh wines for fast consumption to dark reds, bold and powerful meant to age before being able to show their potential in full.

How to make red wine?
Red wine is made from red grapes - a little known fact, however, is that the juice of most grape varieties is not actually colored. The color is in the skins of the grain, so red wine can be made from white wine, the so-called blanc de noir. In order to get red wine, it is necessary to go through a process called maceration - that is, to keep the juice together with the hard parts - skins, seeds, sometimes even clumps. Red wines usually also undergo a process of ageing in barrels, the duration of which is different and depends on the region, the variety of grapes, and the purpose of the wine maker - a more fruitful and fresh wine or wine that has aged for years.

How to choose a nice red wine?
Which wine is good depends a lot on the taste of the person. However, there are some world-renowned red wine regions in the world and betting on wine from them is a safe choice. However, since there are many differences between them - not only in the styles, but also in the varieties used - it is good to get acquainted with them in advance. For example, wine whose purpose is to age is that produced in Bordeaux and in Burgundy, France. In Bordeaux the leading varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and in Burgundy - Pinot Noir. Another major difference between the two regions is the size of the barrels used (as well as their shape) - in the first they are 225l, while in the second - 228l. These are also the regions home to some of the most expensive wines in the world - more information about collectible and investment wines can be found in the Investment / Collectible Wine section.

France is not the only country to produce world-famous red wine. Equally popular is wine from Italy, especially from the Tuscany and Piedmont region. The typical Tuscany variety is the sangiovese from which the famous Chianti is made. Equally famous is Brunello (Brunello di Montalcino), as well as world-renowned super-Tuscan wines, for the production of whom the French varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are used. Piedmont is home to Nebiolo and Barbera, to Barolo, as well as to Barbaresco - that have glorified the region around the world with the red wines produced.

Spain is no less interesting with its Tempranillo grape variety, which it uses to make the world-famous Rioja wine. In our portfolio, we have representatives of both the typical classical producers and producers of recent times, who rely on more fruity wines with little or no contact with oak.

Portugal is also betting on its own grape varieties and red wine from Turiga Nacional or Baga is quickly gaining popularity around the world.

How do we choose the wine at Seewines?
Seewines’ Chief Sommelier Blagoi Kuzmansky selects each wine in our portfolio personally, and most of the producers we represent are small, with a very personal attitude to their production and a limited amount.

He has visited most of the cellars himself, he knows the owner or the oenologist, so we safely place our trust in his selection - from small, boutique, handicrafts to larger, but time-tested with a constant quality of production. The world of wine is vast and wide, with an extensive diversity of flavors and varieties. It is no wonder then, that at Seewines we say that you don't have to love wine, but if you love it life becomes so much more colorful.
